For a History-Making Moment, Kamala Harris Wears Suffragette White

On this night when Kamala Harris is making history on so many fronts, the vice president-elect chose a suffragette white pantsuit for her first address to the nation—connecting her election to the fight for women’s rights.

The National Woman’s Party, an American political organization founded in 1913, adopted white, gold, and purple as its colors, with white as “the emblem of purity.” Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman to run for vice president, wore a white suit in 1984 when she accepted the Democratic party’s nomination; Hillary Clinton famously wore white pantsuits at pivotal moments during her presidential race. This February, female House Democrats wore white to mark the 100th anniversary of the women’s vote during the State of the Union address.

Harris referenced that important milestone in her speech, paying homage to, she said, “All the women who worked to secure and protect the right to vote for over a century: One hundred years ago with the 19th Amendment, 55 years ago with the Voting Rights Act, and now, in 2020, with a new generation of women in our country who cast their ballots and continued the fight for their fundamental right to vote and be heard. Tonight, I reflect on their struggle, their determination and the strength of their vision—to see what can be unburdened by what has been—I stand on their shoulders.” Interestingly, Harris also wore a pussy-bow blouse, perhaps in silent protest against President Trump’s most famous line.

While Harris generally prefers black and navy blue suits (much has been made, as well, of her penchant for Converse and pearls), she donned a white suit this past January when she took an oath in President Trump’s impeachment trial. For this happier occasion, she chose a suit from the woman-founded New York brand Carolina Herrera.
