The Secret to Watching Season 4 of “The Crown”? Skip Over All the Scenes Without Women

It is a truth universally acknowledged that men are boring. Okay, not all men, but nearly all of the men depicted on the hit Netflix series The Crown—which released its hotly anticipated fourth season on Friday—share a bland appearance and soporific tone of voice that are uniquely capable of lulling me to sleep.

I respect British history as much as the next person, but Prince Charles (played, it must be said, very nicely by Josh O’Connor) has only been interesting one time in his life, and that time was Tampongate. I’m not the only person I know who found the previous, Charles-centric season of The Crown more than a little dull, which is why I’ve come up with a solution for a more engaging Season 4 viewing experience; just fast-forward through all the scenes that don’t feature women.

Please understand, this isn’t a knee-jerk feminist appeal for a female-centered content consumption; my only goal is to save you, the viewer, from sitting stupefied before endless scenes of a young, annoying-voiced Charles being curt in dark rooms when you could instead be watching Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson) square off with the IRA. If sectarian conflict isn’t your thing, perhaps you’ll enjoy Queen Elizabeth II (Olivia Colman) hurting the feelings of a young Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin) over and over again; if all else fails, there’s always Princess Margaret (Helena Bonham Carter) delivering ice-cold bon mots to everyone in her orbit.

To be fair, men aren’t The Crown‘s only boredom-inducing downfall; there’s also far too much reliance on hunting, which is famously the dullest leisure activity that any human can pursue. Luckily, though, the show’s latest season is packed with enough female star power to get you through the endless deer-stalking scenes; just hit fast-forward or repair to the kitchen for a thematically appropriate cup of tea while men discuss game, and come back in time to see Princess Diana roller-skate her way into a divided nation’s heart.
