The pandemic and its related lockdowns have spurred much of fashion to ask “the big questions”—you know, the how’s and the why’s of this global industry. Adam Selman, who already recalibrated his business, leaving the runway and ready-to-wear behind for activewear made from recycled fibers, has answered those questions already. Instead, he’s asking a new one. At a masked appointment in his Garment District studio Selman asked, “What is American fashion?” before motioning to a rack of his leggings, sweats, and sports bras. “American fashion is what people wear in America,” he continued. “Why not embrace that?”
Selman’s business has been in overdrive since the pandemic began; he says he’s been working 24/7 to meet the demand for his leopard leggings and molded sports bras. The reality is that people want to be comfortable and stylish, and Selman has plenty to offer on both fronts. For resort 2021, which he designed entirely during New York’s lockdown, he said he was after a little pizzazz. A neon yellow point d’esprit set is certainly eye-catching, and his glittering polos trimmed in ostrich feathers would look nice on Zoom or for a Peloton workout. Selman is expanding his loungewear too, with knit tunics and pants spangled with miniscule gold sequins and ultra-puffy faux shearling hoodies and sweatpants. Swipe over to the tagged page of his Instagram profile and the proof is beyond obvious: This is how Americans are dressing right now.
