We’ve been in the throes of the coronavirus pandemic for so long that there’s already been a few trend cycles. Banana bread had its moment in the sun early on, helping us keep busy while isolating inside. We bought matching sweatsuits after weeks spent at home beckoned for comfort-first clothes. And as soon as it was safe to go outside for socially-distant walks, roller skating started trending upward, too. But one trend outdoes them all: getting a dog.
It does feel odd to call getting a dog a trend, but there’s been an undeniable uptick. Since March, at least ten people I know have gotten dogs. Even I jumped on the bandwagon, taking home a corgi puppy, Wally, in September. But it’s not just me or my social circle that has welcomed a new pet into our lives. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the number of people looking to foster a dog in L.A. and New York has at least doubled since March and it’s estimated that up to 47% of households in the United States have a dog. With so much more time spent at home over the past months and for the foreseeable future, having a pet around to provide affection, support, and distraction seems sensible.
Looking ahead to the quickly approaching holidays, you can’t go wrong by getting pet-centric gifts for dog lovers. Whether a nice-looking dog bed, matching sweaters for a friend and their furry friend, chic harness and leash sets, or even dog-themed fashion items, they could make for the best gift of all.
Here, shop gifts for dog lovers, new and old.
