WHOROMAN IS DISTINGUISHING HERSELF IN A COMPETITIVE MUSIC INDUSTRY

North Carolina native, WhoRoman is making a name for herself rather quickly. After dropping her first single “Get 2 Clappin” she has already pulled in over 30,000 streams between Spotify and YouTube alone in one month. We had the opportunity to interview WhoRoman on instagram.

Hello WhoRoman, Thanks for coming to Honk Magazine to talk about your career.

Tell us a little more about when you first got into music?

When I first got into music I was very hesitant about even dropping any music at first. I honestly wanted to take as much time as possible and sit down and actually learn the business behind music. I wanted to learn as many marketing and promotion techniques so I can push my music better once I actually do drop.

If you could describe your sound/style in one word, what would it be and why?

If I had to put my sound/style in one word it would be, aggressive. I say that because I am a very aggressive person in my music and also in life. Now, I’m not saying violent because I’m not a violent person at all but I am very assertive and when I want to speak on something or do something, it will be done.

What would you say to any aspiring recording artists who look up to your work?

I would have to say, do your research. Research more about the actual music business and how you can push yourself as a brand and your music more. I would tell them to learn anything that they can because it’s so much more than just dropping music and doing music videos.

What quote or mantra do you live by?

Just live life, because time is too short to waste and you can’t get that time back, so keep moving.

What is your hobby outside of music?

I love to paint, draw, read and write mostly. I’m also very big into the fashion world and really hope to be a part of it in a major way some day.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself backstage at a performance, getting my thoughts together and praying while thousands of fans in the crowd scream my name, waiting for me to come out. The crowd already knows I’m going to put on a show that they’ll love.

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why.

How important TikTok/reels are

Stage performance energy

How important having a budget is

The fake love from family/supporters

Not being consistent enough

I learned that not being consistent enough really hurts your chances because you’re giving people time to listen to someone they might like more than you. Always stay on top of your brand and stay consistent if you really want to do this is my goal now. I lost a lot of opportunities just by not staying consistent and I’ll make sure it won’t happen again.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Don’t let someone tell you who you are. That’s why I feel like a lot of other artists lose themselves because they never found themselves from the beginning. And those artists have people telling them what they should do and not letting the artist actually be the artist.

Do you have anything new or upcoming we can expect to see from you?

I have many things in store for the remainder of 2021 and major things coming up in 2022. I will be dropping another single before the end of the year as well as 2 more videos and doing some dope stage performances.

What is the inspiration behind your latest song?

My inspiration behind “Clock In” was that I’m currently working two full time jobs and you could imagine that I clock in quite a bit. But seriously, it came from me being a more serious artist and actually looking at me being in the studio and recording as another job, my work.
