The 7 Things We Learned From Barack Obama’s Interview With Oprah Winfrey

“I have not left my home since March 8th,” Oprah Winfrey confesses to former President Barack Obama on the latest episode of her AppleTV series The Oprah Conversation. These are certainly bizarre times, and as our current political landscape becomes more bizarre with each passing day, it’s oddly comforting to see Obama and Oprah conversing—albeit virtually—as though it’s 2008 again.

Obama made the appearance to coincide with the release of his new book A Promised Land, and those who can’t wait to get their hands on it might consider the Oprah interview a preview. Below, seven things we learned about Obama from his morning with Oprah.

  1. He’s been getting extremely “dad” in quarantine. Obama and his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, have been biking and instituted game nights, although “sometimes I get too competitive,” he admits.

  2. “There may have been some liquor involved” in the Obama family’s celebration when Joe Biden was officially announced as the next president of the United States. Pizza, too!

  3. He’s all too aware of the irony contained in the fact that his choice to wear a tan suit was what constituted a scandal during his presidency, and he’s looking forward to a democracy in which the president “doesn’t routinely lie.”

  4. Obama was already working on this book a month after he left office in 2016, which isn’t surprising, given that it’s over 700 pages.

  5. In a vulnerable moment, Obama admitted that the Sandy Hook shooting was “the hardest day” of his presidency.

  6. In an audio excerpt from the book that aired during the interview, Obama questions his own motivations behind running for president, wondering if he’s still trying to prove himself to his absent father.

  7. Obama admits that his marriage to Michelle was tested by the stresses of two campaigns and the presidency, noting that they “went through our rough patches in the White House … but I tell you that the thing that I think we were good about was talking stuff through, never losing fundamental love and respect for each other, and prioritizing our kids.”
