Margot Robbie wore a loose white linen dress with an open back by Matin to her 30th birthday celebration in Malibu this summer. After one BFF posted the image to her Instagram, the piece sold out, but there’s a lot more to this Aussie label than that viral celebrity style moment.
Michelle Perrett, who has deep roots in Australia’s fashion and textile industries, founded Matin in 2015 using natural, non-synthetic fabrics like linen and Japanese cotton and producing only in small batches with local manufacturers. She’s passionate about Matin’s eco-conscious bona fides: “Along with our insistence on supporting Australian makers and producing, which is increasingly less common here, we pack all of our orders in compostable post-packs and ship using a carbon offset program with both our local and international carriers.”
Couple that ethical approach with an aesthetic that prioritizes softness and ease, and Matin is a label that feels right for this moment. Perrett’s daughter Jacqueline, who joined the company as brand director just after the launch, makes sure of it. Matin’s own Instagram account puts an emphasis on serenity and Perrett’s connection with nature. Michelle cites her travels through southeast Asia in the 1970s as inspiration, and references the effortlessness of Cote d’Azur style in that era, too.
Now, Matin has a new muse in Robbie, whose laid-back style is perfectly in sync with the vibe of the brand. In the absence of glamorous red carpet dressing, the actress is bringing awareness to independent, emerging labels and this is one to keep watching.
Matin is available at Net-a-Porter, Moda Operandi, and Goop.
